Pues aquí dejo mi participación de este mes. Bajó un poco la convocatoria en el foro de CC... Quizás sea la hora de regresar a los superhéroes. El próximo mes se estrena Batman The Dark Knight, así que puede ser el impulso que necesita el concurso.

Ned Flanders...

Los Simpsons es, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los mejores programas familiares de la televisión en la historia. No solo atacan problemas y situaciones concernientes a cada uno de los miembros de una familia (la base de toda sociedad), sino que lo hacen de tal manera que, aunque se presenten de forma chusca y frecuentemente llevadas a la exageración, la esencia de la historia nunca se altera de tal manera que no se entienda el mensaje. Así, los adultos, podemos entender al niño que se preocupa porque no cree poder pasar un exámen en la escuela, o a la niña que se siente aislada y diferente a todo el mundo, o la esposa que se siente atrapada en la vorágine cotidiana de un matrimonio común y corriente, a la bebé que dijo su primera palabra sin que nadie la escuchara, o al papá, que siente temor de ser un mal padre, pero que no puede hacer mucho por cambiar.

Asimismo, Los Simpsons es uno de esos pocos y afortunados programas que se han atrevido a presentar los diferentes aspectos religiosos dentro de la gran variedad de personajes, como Krusty, quien es judío, al hindú Apu, o la misma familia Simpson, quienes son protestantes practicantes (al menos los vemos asistir a la iglesia frecuentemente, aunque casi siempre Homero esté durmiendose en pleno sermón).
De entre esta variedad de personajes, sobresale notablemente Ned Flanders. Un devoto cristiano y estricto seguidor de la Biblia, Ned Flanders es quizás, después de la familia central, el personaje más fácil de identificar de la serie más famosa de televisión.

Los creadores de la serie nunca han tenido ningún problema para presentar los aspectos religiosos de sus personajes con algún toque que, sin ser ofensivo, nos pueda sacar una sonrisa, desde la Cruz Davidiana hecha con globos por un joven payaso Krusty, pasando por las bandas de rock cristianas que poco antes habían sido "satánicas", hasta al grado de pintar al personaje menos pensado como el verdadero diablo (chequen el episodio Treehouse of Horror IV).

Tal es el éxito de Ned Flanders, que salió un libro llamado Flanders' Book of Faith. Aquí les dejo este artículo al respecto.

No one would mistake Ned Flanders, the goofy next-door neighbor in "The Simpsons," for a polished televangelist like Joel Osteen. But over the past two decades the zealous cartoon character has become one of the best-known evangelicals on America's small screen. With Americans spending exponentially more time on their sofas watching television than in pews listening to sermons, this is no insignificant matter.

In the inevitably intertwined world of religion and commerce, it's only natural that the man portrayed as "Blessed Ned of Springfield" on the cover of Christianity Today magazine should have his own "new testament." And so he does. "Flanders' Book of Faith," by "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, is a slim, illustrated entry in the show's "Library of Wisdom" series.

For years, the TV show's writers, fiercely protective of their reputation for irreverence, denied that they were in any way sympathetic toward sincere belief, as embodied by the Flanders character. But releasing the book under Mr. Groening's name puts an imprimatur on that kind-to-religion interpretation, long held in younger evangelical circles.

A fundamentally decent true believer, Ned is firmly in the theological tradition of Mr. Osteen, Robert Schuller and Norman Vincent Peale in at least one respect. He, too, is an irrepressible apostle of optimism. The only time his faith has been shaken, and then only briefly, came in 2000 when his wife, Maude, was killed in a freak accident (following a real-life pay dispute between the show's producers and the actress who supplied Maude's voice). As his neighbor Homer Simpson puts it during one service at Springfield Community Church: "If everyone here were like Ned Flanders, there'd be no need for heaven. We'd already be there."

Naturally, Ned's view of the Almighty is central to the book: "God is the Alpha and the Omega, maker of Heaven and Earth. . . . God is the creator of the universe and the source of our knowledge of right and wrong. Ned maintains a very close relationship with Him, communicating His desires to anyone who will listen and asking Him favors on a minute-by-minute basis." Among God's attributes are his love for everyone, but readers are advised to "watch out for His temper."

This is not simply a book of wacky systematic theology. There is also a great deal about Flanders's personal life, which, like that of most evangelicals, is inextricably tied to his faith life. There is a lightly mocking tone to some of these anecdotes. His recipe for Devil's Food Cake, for example, includes a quart of holy water and an exorcism.

Like many modern, suburban believers, Ned embraces popular culture in a modified form rather than simply rejecting it. He reads the novel "Harry Potter and the Consequences of Dabbling in Magic" to his kids before bed, and he listens to a Christian rock station, 102.7 BLISS FM.

Prayer and thanksgiving are a big part of Ned's life, the book explains. He allows a full 30 minutes for grace before dinner in his daily planner, and he gets to No. 143 in counting his blessings before nodding off. Ned's favorite things include his Rapture-ready tote bag and the "I â Jesus" bumper sticker on his 1992 Geo Metro.

In the book, Lisa Simpson, Homer's brainy, skeptical daughter -- who before converting to Buddhism often served as the voice of mainline Protestantism on the show -- asks Ned about the literal truth of the Bible. "How do we know the writers really wrote the word of God and didn't just make up a bunch of stuff?" It's all true, Ned insists, sounding like he's been reading C.S. Lewis: "If it were false, then the fellas who wrote the Scriptures would have been lying, or insane, or both."

The "Simpsons" writers have managed to navigate the tricky space between animation and caricature in portraying Ned's Christian faith. He has a dual, almost contradictory appeal. College-age evangelicals see many of their own well-intentioned foibles in him. And some secular viewers outside the Sun Belt suburbs and the heartland -- who may have yet to meet an evangelical in the flesh and may even be hostile to the rise of religious conservatives -- find him to be an accessible and even sympathetic exemplar of American evangelicalism.

"The Simpsons" has left an indelible mark on the culture. In the past couple of weeks, the show has even become a theme park ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fla., and Los Angeles.

In the early decades of commercial television, networks shunned prime-time portrayals of religion as part of Americans' everyday life, largely for fear of offending viewers. The most important contribution of "The Simpsons" to the national conversation may be that it made religion safe for television -- thanks to a lovable evangelical named Ned Flanders.

Controversial author Salman Rushdie has claimed his old pals U2 are among the most subdued rockers in the world.

Rushdie, who hid out in a cottage in lead singer Bono's back garden after receiving death threats for publishing The Satanic Verses, became friends with the group in the 1990s.

Now the world-famous author has given a rare insight into life backstage with the world's biggest rock band.

He revealed: "Backstage at U2 concerts there are no groupies, just creches. They're not at all rock and roll.

"Bono and the Edge are serious people, not just in it for the laughs.

Bono and the Edge even turned the words to his poem "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" into a song for the band. And in 1993, U2 invited Rushdie onstage with them during a concert in Wembley Stadium.

Back then Bono was in his McPhisto stage, complete with fake devil's horns on his head.

At that stage Rushdie had a serious death threat against him, issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini, then supreme leader of Iran.

The Japanese translator of The Satanic Verses was murdered, the Italian translator stabbed in 1991 and the Norwegian publisher almost killed in 1993.

Before Rushdie's threat was lifted, he secretly stayed with Bono at his home in Dalkey, south Co. Dublin, dining with the Hewson family at night while under round-the-clock protection from bodyguards.

El dibujo básico lo hice en un rato el mismo día y en realidad disfruté mucho la idea, aunque viéndolo es retrospectiva, quizás debí usar otra posición más relajada para el personaje y menos características involucradas. Acepta el Vaticano existencia de extraterrestres.

EFE / El Universal / Ciudad del Vaticano Miércoles 14 de mayo de 2008 / El director del Observatorio Astronómico del Vaticano, conocido como la "Specola", el jesuita argentino José Gabriel Funes, ha asegurado que se puede creer en Dios y en los extraterrestres.

"Se puede admitir la existencia de otros mundos y otras vidas, incluso más evolucionada que la nuestra, sin por ello poner en entredicho la fe en la creación, en la encarnación y en la redención. Es posible creer en Dios y en los extraterrestres", afirmó Funes, de 45 años, en una entrevista al diario vaticano "L'Osservatore Romano", que la publica hoy en su edición vespertina.

El jesuita argentino aseguró que la astronomía acerca al hombre a Dios y subrayó que es un "mito" considerar que la astronomía favorece una visión atea del mundo.

Funes precisó que el Universo no es infinito, que tiene 14 mil millones de años y que la teoría del "big bang" es la que mejor explica, hasta el momento, el origen del mundo.

Preguntado si la teoría del "big bang" da valor o contradice la visión de fe basada en lo que cuenta la Biblia, Funes manifestó que "como astrónomo, continuo creyendo que Dios es el creador del Universo y que nosotros no somos productos de la casualidad, sino hijos de un padre bueno, el cual tiene para nosotros un proyecto de amor".

Funes manifestó también que los astrónomos sostienen que el Universo está formado por cien mil millones de galaxias, cada una de las cuales compuesta por cien mil millones de estrellas y que muchas de ellas o casi todas pueden tener planetas.

"¿Como se puede excluir que la vida no se haya también desarrollado en otras partes?" se preguntó Funes, que agregó que formas de vida pueden existir incluso sin oxígeno e hidrógeno.

Interpelado si se refería a seres similares a los hombres o más evolucionados, el jesuita argentino dijo que "es posible" y que "aunque no tenemos ninguna prueba, en un universo tan grande no se puede excluir esa hipótesis".

"Al igual que existen una multiplicidad de criaturas en la Tierra, también podría haber otros seres, inteligentes, creados por Dios. Ello no está en contradicción con nuestra fe, porque no podemos poner límites a la libertad creadora de Dios", dijo Funes.

El religioso agregó, parafraseando a San Francisco, que si llamamos a las criaturas de la Tierra "hermano" y "hermana", "¿por qué no podemos hablar de un 'hermano extraterrestre', ya que formaría parte de la creación".

A la pregunta de si la redención también sirve para esos "hermanos extraterrestres", Funes manifestó que Jesús se encarnó una vez por todas y que la encarnación es un evento único e irrepetible y que está seguro de que esas eventuales seres también gozarían de la misericordia de Dios.

Jean Valjean...

Cuando escribiò Los Miserables, Victor Hugo no sòlo escribiò una de las novelas màs importantes de la literatura universal, sino que tambièn creò a uno de los personajes màs complejos del que se pueda leer: Jean ValJean. Quizàs no exista otro personaje como Jean Valjean... bueno sì, existe uno, pero Su historia es contada en otro libro màs grande aùn.

Jean Valjean naciò con todos los pretextos -justificados- para odiar al bueno y al malo asì como al rico y al pobre, al anciano y al niño como a la mujer y al hombre. Un ladròn pendenciero ex-presidiario reincidente, Jean Valjean no era màs que una alma perdida y destinada al màs oscuro de los futuros y a la màs sucia de las existencias... hasta que se encontrò con un hombre de Dios, literalmente. El cura Myriel hizo màs que darle abrigo y cena por una noche, le diò la salvaciòn, "comprando" su vida.

A lo largo de la historia, la vida de Valjean se cruzo con aquellos a quienes se les ha negado el bueno rostro de la fortuna. Hasta que en este ir y venir de vidas, conoce a la pequeña Cosette, y su vida vuelve a cambiar nuevamente, ahora conociendo un tipo de amor que nunca imagino posible existir: el amor de padre.

A pesar de todas las circunstancias adversas que se le presentaron a lo largo de su vida, Jean Valjean no permitiò que ninguna le amargara el corazòn, ni que olvidara que por la amabilidad de un extraño, èl no se habìa perdido. Valjean nos da uno de los ejemplos màs grandes de amor al que tengamos acceso en la literatura, y que es un reflejo a lo que leemos en 1era de Corintios 13: "El amor es paciente y muestra comprensión. El amor no tiene celos, no aparenta ni se infla. No actúa con bajeza ni busca su propio interés, no se deja llevar por la ira y olvida lo malo. No se alegra de lo injusto, sino que se goza de la verdad. Perdura a pesar de todo, lo cree todo, lo espera todo y lo soporta todo." Asì es el amor de Jean Valjean.

Victor Hugo se definìa a si mismo como un Catòlico durante su juventud, respetando a la Iglesia y su autoridad religiosa, sin embargo, paso a una etapa de catolicismo no practicante, y despuès expresaba sus ideas anti-papales. Llegò a practicar el Espiritualismo, e inclusive aistiò a reuniones de posesiòn por espiritistas, y en un censo en 1872 se definiò a si mismo como un pensador libre. Nunca perdiò su antipatìa hacia la Iglesia Catòlica, por la gran indiferencia que vio que tenìa esta hacia la clase trabajadora, asimismo, al tiempo de la publicaciòn de Los Miserables, Victor Hugo contò 740 ataques de parte de la Iglesia Catòlica en su periòdico oficial hacia su obra.

Hacia el final de su vida, Victor Hugo declarò "La Religiòn pasarà, pero Dios permanecerà". Predijo que el Cristianismo desaparecerìa eventualmente, pero que la gente seguirìa creyendo en "Dios, el Alma y el Poder".

Encuentran tarjeta de felicitación de Año Nuevo escrita por Anna Frank...

LA HAYA.- La Casa Museo de Anna Frank en Amsterdam informó hoy del hallazgo de una tarjeta de felicitación de Año Nuevo escrita por la niña judía, famosa por el diario que escribió mientras estuvo refugiada entre 1942 y 1944, antes de morir en un campo de concentración.

La tarjeta, escrita a su amiga Sanne Lermann en diciembre de 1937, fue hallada en el interior de un libro por el director de escuela Paul van den Heuvel mientras buscaba en la tienda de antigüedades de sus padres en Naarden (centro de Holanda) material para dar una clase sobre Anna Frank a sus alumnos, según un comunicado del museo.

En la parte delantera de la postal aparece una campana en tonos verdes y violetas sobre un paisaje nevado bajo el que se lee, en alemán: "Mucha suerte para el año nuevo".

La felicitación fue escrita por Anna Frank desde la casa de su abuela en la ciudad alemana de Aken, desde donde el museo cree que el mismo día escribió otras tarjetas navideñas para desear un próspero año nuevo.

Mostrando su "alegría" por el hallazgo, el museo precisó que se sabe con certeza que en la misma fecha Anna Frank también escribió a una antigua vecina de Fráncfort (Alemania).

La carta ahora hallada se ha escaneado y comparado con la que escribió a esa amiga de Fráncfort para certificar su autenticidad.

La Casa Museo de Anna Frank intenta llegar ahora a un acuerdo con el propietario de la postal, que pertenece al padre del maestro que la encontró, para poder tomarla en préstamo en su colección en Amsterdam.

Peter Parker y el vagabundo...

Yo sè que es algo extraño hablar de la religiòn o las creencias de los superhèroes, finalmente no son màs que sòlo personajes creados por la mente de otra persona, sin embargo creo necesario tocar el tema. ¿Por què? Porque nos damos cuenta de lo que quieren transmitir sus creadores o sus equipos creativos en el momento en que un niño, joven o adulto hojea un comic.

Incluso se ha manejado en medios tan masivos como el cine, con ejemplos como Daredevil y Superman Returns e inclusive Spider-Man 3.

En cuanto al medio impreso, los comics, han tenido una mayor libertad y han demostrado un reciente "reavivamiento" en el tema. Digo reavivamiento porque dentro de todos las historias principales, esas que llegan a los medios de comunicaciòn masivos, solo algunas destacan en este aspecto. Y una de esas es indudablemente Sensational Spider-Man N 40.

En medio de la Civil War y de la tragedia que significò para Parker el confiar en Tony Stark, la adorable anciana que ha cuidado de èl desde que era un niño, la tìa May està al borde de la muerte. Obviamente Parker necesita respuestas, y esas respuestas solamente se las puede dar... mejor lèanlo.

Por extraño que parezca, la música cristiana, principalmente en EEUU, se diversifica en muchos géneros, algunos que nunca se pensaría pudiera suceder. Tal como sucede con la banda de metal gótico Saviour Machine, un grupo que tiene en su haber ya varios discos y más de una década de existencia.
